Three Rivers Community College hires new president

Thursday, November 13, 2008

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Dr. Devin Stephenson will become the fifth president in the 41-year history of Three Rivers Community College beginning July 1.

The 55-year-old Alabama native signed a contract and mailed it in before he was hired by the college trustees at Wednesday’s board meeting.

"Dr. Stephenson is an exceptional leader and educator," said board chairman Steve Cookson in a prepared statement. "His long experience as a proven leader and administrator and his extensive work with rural community colleges will ensure that Three Rivers Community College continues on a path of growth and its successful record of serving the students and communities in our region."

Trustee Wilbur Thornton made the motion to approve Stephenson for the college position of chief executive officer, it was seconded by Randy Winston and the board unanimously approved. Trustee James Grassham was unable to be present due to his health, but gave fellow trustee Bill Holida the power of attorney to give Stephenson his approval so all six board members would be in agreement for this decision. A 16-person presidential search committee, comprised of community leaders representative of the college’s fourcounty taxing district, previously narrowed the presidential candidates down to 53 hopefuls they thought most qualified, then submitted the top three applicants to the board for final approval.

Stephenson was the board’s top choice for the position until he unexpectedly withdrew from the presidential search at the last minute to consider another job opportunity.

Aside from Stephenson’s indecisiveness, the Arkansas woman who was being considered in the group also withdrew, citing family health reasons.

The other finalist, already an administrator at the college, did not receive a majority approval by the board for the position.

Subsequently, Joe Rozman, former vice president for student affairs and information technology, was promoted to president until June 30, the deadline the board set for having a new president in place.

During a special meeting two weeks ago, the board invited Stephenson to campus to be reconsidered for the position. Stephenson explained that the pastor of ChristWay Church in Gardendale, Ala., asked him to

become executive administrator days after he held a public forum at Three Rivers in September.

"It took time for me to prayerfully think through what I have prepared academically in my life for and realize the impact I can make at a community college and the difference I can make in lives," explained Stephenson this morning. "I have spent seven years of my life earning a doctorate in higher education and I have prepared for more than 30 years to become a leader of an institution."

Currently the vice president of external affairs at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton, Ala., Stephenson is leading an initiative to reaffirm the accreditation of the college, a process which will be complete in spring. He said while he has not worked out any details as to when he will begin full time at Three Rivers, he plans to visit Poplar Bluff at least monthly to stay involved in the strategic planning process at Three Rivers and find a place to live with his wife.

Stephenson’s base salary will be $145,400, plus an annual housing allowance of $12,000 a year, a one-time moving allowance of up to $8,000 and access to the college car for business purposes, which includes gas, insurance and maintenance paid for by the district.

I don't have a problem with Mr. Bess. His incredible win record is impressive to say the least. I just don't rate sports as very valuable.

I DO have a problem with the statement "TRCC is basketball, and basketball is TRCC."

The academic portion of the college has affected MORE peoples lives than the athletic portion, and decisions about how a college is run should consider academics first. Sports should not be a "sacred cow" at the expense of the really important parts of what a college is all about.

Books first.

Eliza,

Look at what Gene Bess has done. That man has given more kids than you can imagine a future. I agree, sports aren't everything. However, sports are Gene Bess' avenue to enriching kids lives, motivating them to be better people, and encouraging them to aspire to greater things. When someone says TRCC is basketball, it means a lot more than a bunch of people bouncing a ball around. I understand what you're getting at, but please reconsider your statement. You will not find a bigger proponent of academia than Gene Bess.

I hope the hell that the board does not intend to pay him until he is at the university full-time. I wonder what his connection will be with his church in Alabama, once he comes to TRCC, and if he plans to devote time to them, while being paid by the taxpayers of the district? The school car better not be showing up in Alabama on a regular basis.

TRCC is not JUST the Gene Bess Basketball program, it is first and foremost an educational institution.

BASKETBALL is just a bunch of folks running around dribbling and shooting a ball. The world goes on whether it happens or not. Not important. No real impact on the grand scheme of things.

EDUCATION is preparing people for worthwhile careers that can help support them (and their families) later and improve the community around them. LOTS of impact on both the individual who takes the classes and the overall community!

Just don't mess with the basketball program. Let Gene do his thing and you oversee whatever else they do there besides support the basketball program. TRCC is basketball, and basketball is TRCC.
