Students at the Palin rally?

Wednesday, October 29, 2008

I'll be covering the Sarah Palin rally bright and early tomorrow. Will there be any students there too?

Specifically, are there any school field trips planned? Any parents who plan on individually pulling their kids from school for the event?

I've written stories about ways teachers are incorporating the election into their lessons and ways students are becoming involved in campaigning.

More events have come across my radar this week. Delta High School held a mock presidential debate Wednesday. Students ran the event, but they also heard from U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson. On Thursday, Alma Schrader Elementary School in Cape Girardeau will hold a mock election. "We have voting booths, voter registration cards... the works," principal Ruth Ann Orr wrote to me in an e-mail.

I'll be interested to see how many students attend the Palin event. In some cities, schools have prohibited class trips to political rallies. Here's a story from the St. Petersburg Times, where a school district set a policy prohibiting actions that could be seen as a political endorsement, including field trips to political rallies, even if a class were to attend rallies from both parties.

What do you think about that policy? Teachers, would your school allow you to take your class to a rally?
