Perreault powers Perryville

Josh Perreault ran for 240 yards and the Perryville Pirates held on to the ball for over 34 minutes as they upset the host Kennett Indians 31-12 in the Class 3 District 1 opener Friday.

"That was the goal coming in, 4 yards and a cloud of dust," Perryville coach Jim May said. "We knew if we could control the ball, their quarterback would be standing on the sidelines and that was huge for us."

The Pirates (2-6, 1-0 District 1) capitalized on five Kennett turnovers, turning them into 10 points and snuffing out several chances for the Tribe to get back in the game.

Perryville took a 7-6 lead with 2 minutes, 7 seconds left in the first quarter when Josh Hargrove scored on a 2-yard run, then pushed the lead to 14-6 less than 30 seconds later when Perreault scored on an 8-yard run set up by an interception.

The Pirates made it 21-6 with 4:58 left in the first half when Brent Roth caught an 11-yard pass from Garrett Flentge, then pushed it to 24-6 on Ben Prevallet's 32-yard field goal shortly before halftime.

Perryville capped the game's scoring with 9:10 left in the contest when Roth scored on a 1-yard run.

The Pirates outgained the Tribe 409-204 in total yards and racked up 330 yards on the ground. The Pirates also finished with 19 first downs to the Indians' 11.

Flentge was 4-of-7 passing for 79 yards and hurt Kennett several times in the first half.

Tribe signal-caller Blake Parr was 20-of-33 with 163 yards passing and a touchdown, but was intercepted four times.

Scott City 50, Grandview 14

The Rams improved to 3-4 with their Class 2 District 2 road victory.

Scott City returns to action Friday when it hosts Crystal City.

VOLLEYBALL Mississippi Valley Conference tournament

It took three games, but Leopold edged Meadow Heights to win the conference tournament title.

The Wildcats edged the Panthers 23-25, 25-12, 25-9.

Casey Bucher led the Wildcats' offense with 13 kills, while Kirsten Thele added eight.

Danielle Beel recorded 10 kills and four blocks, while Lauren Seiler had 17 assists and four service aces for Leopold (20-2-1).

Courtney Brune and Chelsey Kight led the Panthers (15-10-1) with nine kills apiece.

Ashley Doublin had 20 assists, while Heather Dietiker and Jill Mills chipped in three blocks each.

The third-place match also went three games, with Zalma holding off Oak Ridge.

Game scores were 25-20, 21-25, 25-16.
