Roman named acting Southeast Missouri State men's basketball coachThursday, October 16, 2008
PDF: Oct. 6 NCAA letter to Southeast Missouri State University (1 megabytes) Zac Roman has been named the acting men's basketball coach for Southeast Missouri State University, interim athletic director Cindy Gannon announced Thursday. The move comes one week after Southeast men's basketball coach Scott Edgar was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an NCAA hearing on potential violations and athletic director Don Kaverman was placed on administrative leave pending the termination of his contract in February. The NCAA sent the university a notice of allegations earlier this month that outlined potential violations involving the men's basketball program. Those allegations included payment of fees for a student-athlete and claims that Edgar provided false and misleading information during the investigation process. Roman, in his second year as an assistant for Southeast, took over for one game last year when Edgar served an Ohio Valley Conference suspension related to comments he made about officiating. Southeast lost that nationally televised game, 86-85 at Murray State. Roman, 39, is a Wichita State graduate. Assistant coaches Rodney Hamilton and Tommy Suitts also interviewed for the position. Hamilton, 32, is in his second season on the staff, while Suitts, 60, was hired last month. "This is a difficult time for our program," Roman said in a statement released by the university. "But I am dedicated to making this team a cohesive unit and working cooperatively with our assistant coaches to give our players every opportunity to succeed. I am very pleased to be offered the acting coach position." The university does not expect the hearing with the NCAA to take place until the Committee on Infractions' meeting of Feb. 20-21 with the possibility it could be pushed back to the April meeting. Southeast has just two regular-season games scheduled after Feb. 21. Related Links

What's with all the horrible grammar and typing like you're a 16 year old texting on your cell phone? Anyway, lets give Coach Roman a shot. He had no prior knowledge of Edgar coming in to this program. I'm sure Edgar sold himself really well when he hired Roman...and then he was sucked into this awful program, with an awful coach. The team last year hated Edgar and everything about him. The man was plain crazy. Roman has a much better relationship with these players than Edgar ever did and focusing on defense is MORE than Edgar ever did. So right off the bat there may be something positive happening, but the truth of the matter is that Edgar brought in a horrible recruiting class and Roman will have his hands full trying to squeeze some talent out of some (not all) of these players. If nothing else, its a new chance for SEMO Basketball. A new coach that hopefully isn't as much of a self-centered clown as Edgar was...give him a chance...we'll just see what happens.
littlebunfoofoo ur right hs bb & d1bb r not the same. But u can't question what the man did for hsbb. U saying a high school coach couldn't coach a failing d1 program? Thats jibberish. U must not like mcferren because he probably coached against u or maybe u had a son on a team he coached against & that team got ran out the gym. Besides he can't be no worse than these losers thats been coaching since ron shumate left. I'm sure this zac roman will be a loser also. He's part of edgars staff. Hey we'll see. But I'm sure I'm rite.
Lets give Zac a chance to coach these boys up. Also, lets not base this season on him. Edgar brought had an awful recruiting class and also lost Pearson, Rhodes, and Bogan. He said they will play Defense and that is better than last season
Why won't the Lennie McFerren people wake up and realize that a HS BB coach and a Division 1 BB coach are not the same? I am so sick and tired of those people posting mindless dribble.
If southeast really wanted a winning program in basketball then they shouldve hired high school coaching legend lennies mcferren who I heard was a candidate before Edgar got hired. I don't really know how true this was, but I think he wouldve been a helluva coach for southeast if in fact he was a cadidate. He coached charleston to 5-6 state championships then went to nmcc and coached them to back to back state titles. Watching him coach I think he brought out the talent in his teams even when it was thought some of the teams didn't have that much talent. When this assistant head coach fails then they should consider coach mcferren if he's even interested in the job. If u have seen him coach then u should know what I mean.
It's Dr. Suresh!
This is the best choice that could've been made...Good luck Coach Roman!
