McAlister's Select closes

Thursday, October 9, 2008

Earlier this week I learned that McAlister's Select is no longer in business at West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau. The news came as a surprise to myself and others in this area. I called mall management, who declined to comment on the puzzling situation. This morning I'm calling the restaurant's owner to see if I can get any additional information. If I find out any more details you'll read about it here and in my Monday business column.

The restaurant's closure is not good news for mall management, who now must find another tenant to fill the space. You may remember that on Aug. 28 officials with Steve & Barry's confirmed the discount clothing store would be closing its West Park Mall location, which will leave the 80,000-square-foot space unoccupied.

The optimistic side of me hopes mall management finds tenants to fill the two spaces. After all, both are prime locations for a restaurant and giant clothing store. Any ideas who you'd like to see as tenants in the two spaces?

My choice would be Trader Joe's, something for everyone.

I have also heard that McAlister's Select closed because they didn't pay rent...

I would love to see a TJ Maxx and as for food...somewhere that has decently priced burger and fries!

I still miss Kroger's

How about a Guitar Center?

I called GC's headquarters years ago whenever the Circuit City closed. I thought that would be a prime location for a GC.

Unfortunately GC is not in the franchise buisness.

Pickle:
It sounds like you might be onto something there. Hopefully they get it filled very quickly, nobody likes seeing vacancies. Maybe they can get a local guy to fill it before Christmas...Cosmo's Coffee might be a good option.

Cosmo, I think you're wishing on the Casino idea. However, I would be in favor of that too, but it will never happen in Cape. I would love to see Burlington Coat Factory or Babies R Us. I know Cape has a Toys R Us, but I like Babies R Us for the clothes.

According to the eviction notice posted on the windows one day last week the owner was Don Spears and he owes over $44,000 in late rent. I have a feeling he was just a front man for the big weasel who owns the other McAlister's. My guess is that DS struck an agreement up with DH and then ended up getting screwed just like everyone else who deals with him does.

Now...has anyone seen my pickle?

I would like to see a T.J. Friday's in Cape.

I can feel my arteries harden just by reading the names of these places...

gehagge,
My favorite NE restaurants are:
* Valentinos
* Runza (I don't like the Runzas but love their burgers and frings)
* Stouffer's
* Lamar's
* Ice cream at the UNL Dairy Store
* Old Spaghetti Works
* Famous Daves
* Zio's at Omaha's Old Market
Just a short list, but those are my favorites.

Sad.

Welcome my friends to the new economy.

It will only get worse for the next 12 months.

Then it will get better

Brian,
I am from Nebraska. I would be interested to see what you would like from Nebraska. Maybe we can compare NE wish lists. :)

-- Posted by gehagge on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, 7:09 pm CDT

My wish list (not just in the mall but in the Cape area):
* Free-standing Chick-fil-A
* Raising Canes (a chicken finger restaurant that began from a Baton Rouge M.B.A. student who received a C on his proposal for it but the idea has spead to towns and states throughout the U.S.)
* TGI Friday's
* Backyard Burgers
* Lamar's Donuts
* A restaurant that serves Chicago-style hot dogs
* A few places you all may be unfamiliar with that were poplular in my hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska

I know there are many other great restaurants that could locate here but those are just the ones I wish would come here.

Yes to the Trader Joe's.

Then we can get a Ruth Chris and an IKEA.

Mayard: A TJ's would be great, but we aren't on their shipping routes, so we're out of luck.

-- Posted by Just_Me on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, 3:13 pm CDT

Cozmo: It's already a gamble when you go out there now--will they or will they not have what I want/need?

A Dillards would be great, but I know I'm dreaming. How about any store that sells nice clothes that men & women between the ages of 20 & 50 want to wear. As for food, I don't really care, because I don't spend enough time there to need to eat. Besides how many food places does a mall this size need? Pasta House, China Star, El Durango, Different Twist Prezel, Kacies Cookies, Cinnabon, and the coffee bar in B&N seem more than sufficient.

Hey Kosmo...guess what. The figures are just out, and here in Las Vegas, the August take on the Strip is down 7.1% year over year. It's expected to be worse for September, so this isn't the right economic environment for a new casino.

How about Trader Joe's?

-- Posted by Maynard on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, 2:18 pm CDT

I have an idea...turn the mall into a casino!

-- Posted by Cosmo_Kramer on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, 1:51 pm CDT

TJ Maxx in the Steve and Barry's location--as long as they get the smell out of there first.

-- Posted by R.D. on Thu, Oct 9, 2008, 11:35 am CDT

It seems as though the mall has a rotating door of tenants and mall ownership. I don't know what I would suggest to fill those spaces and succeed.

I know there is a mexican restaurant already attached but to have Chipotle or Qdoba would be awesome. We would finally have quality mexican food in Cape.

TJ MAXX or Marshall's!!
