Rememberance held at Old Lorimier Cemetery

An overview of the lives of 15 people interred at Old Lorimie cemetery will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of the cemetery in Cape Girardeau. The event is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Convention and Visitor's Bureau,

The formal ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Old Lorimier Cemetery, at the corner of Fountain and Washington streets. Remarks will be made by Cape Girardeau Mayor Jay Knudtson, cemetery sexton Terrell Weaver and Southeast Missouri State University history professor Frank Nickell will be made. Tours will be given after the ceremony until 4:30 p.m. There is no admission charge. Proceeds from donations will benefit the preservation and maintenance of Old Lorimier Cemetery.

Some of the prominent people buried there are Edward Regenhardt, the builder of Southeast Missouri State University's Academic Hall; Col. George Thilenius, Vienna World's Fair gold medal winner for flour manufactured at his Cape Girardeau mill; Gilbert Koehler, advocate for education who was instrumental in establishing the Kage School; Louis Houck, railroad entrepreneur and longtime Southeast Missouri State University board of regents member; Robert Sturdivant president of the old Sturdivant Bank in downtown Cape Girardeau; Amy Kimmal, creator of the influential Wednesday Club in Cape Girardeau who affected community events and organizations for nearly a century.
