Recordings of the 911 calls related to Zachary Snyder's death played in court

Tuesday, September 30, 2008

Below is a brief description of the four phone calls placed to 911 on Feb. 14, before and after Steven Julian, a fugitive recovery agent for the state, allegedly shot and killed Zachary Snyder, a parole jumper he was trying to arrest.

All four calls have now been played for the jury at Julian's trial for involuntary manslaughter in Callaway County.

The first call the Cape Girardeau Public Safety Communicator received alerting them to the presence of fugitive Snyder in the area of Themis Street took place at 6:19 p.m. This call came from an anonymous caller, later known to be Leslie Tyler, a friend of Snyder's, who testified yesterday that he called police because he didn't want to get in trouble for harboring Snyder.

"He said he was coming back but his ex-girlfriend lives with me and she's pregnant and I don't want him around us," Tyler told Danielle Boyd, the communicator he spoke with.

The second call came from Julian himself, at 7:07 p.m. This call went to a different dispatcher, and Julian asked if there was a car around the area of 2849 Themis St. He was told there wasn't, and Julain requested an officer contact at that address. He gave a description of Snyder.

An officer was informed of the calls and on his way, as there had just been a shift change at the police department and officers were still in briefing.

The third call came from Julian again at 7:12 pm. "The subject is in the house right now. I need officer help," Julian told dispatch.

At 7:16 p.m., four minutes after the last call, Julian called to report that he had shot Snyder because the 23-year-old "tried to jump him," and needed an ambulance.
