BREAKING NEWS: DNR to Chaffee: boil tap water

Monday, September 8, 2008

The city of Chaffee has announced a second boil water order has been issued by a Missouri Department of Natural Resources inspector.

The city was under a 10-day order issued Aug. 26, when inspectors found little to no chlorine in the city's public water system.

Boil water procedures from MoDNR:

Boil water vigorously for three minutes prior to use. Use only boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, diluting fruit juices and all other food preparation or consumption. Use of bottled water may be a feasible, though relatively expensive, alternative to boiling tap water when under a boil water order.

Do not use ice from a household automatic icemaker or use any ice made with un-boiled water from this system. Make ice cubes with water that has been boiled or purchase ice.

Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water.

Allow water to cool sufficiently before drinking.

Water used for hand washing or bathing does not generally need to be boiled. Supervision of children is necessary while bathing to ensure they do not ingest water. Boil water advisories typically last about two days, allowing systems to return operating pressure to normal, collect samples for bacteriological testing and receive the laboratory results.

If boiling water is not feasible, several procedures for chemical disinfection of drinking water can be found at www.epa.gov/safewater/faq/emerg.html.

The department encourages individuals who experience water outages or have questions about their drinking water to contact the nearest Department of Natural Resources’ Regional Office by calling

800-361-4827 or 573-751-5331 or if available by visiting the Web at www.dnr.mo.gov/regions/regions.htm. To see a map of current boil orders in the state, visit www.dnr.mo.gov/env/wpp/boil/boilmap.jpg

Peg, can you please up-date us on the water problem? I think you have more inside than those who need to. We have RUMORS that this is going to be a long ride!! Please keep in mind that those of us that went to find out about this last Tuesday were just VENTING. But I would like a update.

mud-be-gone your are so right. If folks don't want to get along and see our city moving forward then ******* the coucil and let someone else do it. Citizens if the council person in your ward is causing a lot of the problems start a petition or attend a meeting and ask that they be removed maybe you know someone that would do a better job. It is your town and you should have a say in it. All of this didn't happen overnight some of the citations from DNR that haven't been fixed date back to when moyers was mayor. Ask TC and if he's honest he will tell you hicks had gotten a lot of quotes on fixing problems but was told "the city doesn't have the money" instead of trying to come up with solutions it's easier to put blame on others but this doesn't fix the problem. FYI moyers and nordins biggest complaint was too much chlorene well it looks like we have none at all now. I guess there not as smart as they think.

WOW !!! You people surely do make a lot of noise and point plenty of fingers but not much gets accomplished!! A couple of posts here have suggested that we need to stop complaining and bring some solutions to the table - well here goes :
1. The council needs to swallow their pride and work together to solve this current crisis.
2. The council needs to make whatever sacrifices necessary to demonstrate the leadership that they promised at election time, up to and including resignation if they have become part of the problem and not part of the solution! ".. resigned because of stress and harassment by certain council members."
3. The city needs to petition Eric Hicks to return to work as soon as possible, as the record denotes we did not have these problems before his resignation.
4. The city needs to hire the help needed for the police and public works departments. Period!
4. The current procedure of "letting citizens blow off some steam"and then proceed with business as usual has to stop!
5. The citizens of Chaffee need to recognize that it will take time, money and a huge amount of effort to resolve some of the current problems, such as identifying and replacing sections of the water distribution system, perhaps some volunteers for a citizen committee to report to the council.
6. The city needs a website to effect a means of communication that begins to reflect that the 21st century is really here! Not only to get out a "boil-water alert" but to show our best to potential new businesses and residents. Even a little good news like the sports results and new baby announcements!
7. Finally, the city employees need an effective and sensible way to communicate their needs, concerns and suggestions without fear of reprisals. Perhaps the citizens could use the same method as their voice when not able to attend a council meeting. Possibly a Blog on the city website!?
Well there's a start - now blast away as usual or be constructive and add some suggestions of your own! Let the "Mud-Be-Gone"

Universal_Turner, no kidding.

The chlorinators at the plant were still not functioning well, it seems.

City hall had zero chlorine today. Minimal amounts were detected elsewhere.
