Athletes Turn to Science at the 2008 Summer Olympics

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

Some athletes at the 2008 summer Olympics are glad they listened in science class. The reason, they are applying physics and wearing high-tech science gear to gain an edge over the competition.

Swimmers are applying Bernoulli's principle to move through the water faster while bicycle racers are using techniques to reduce wind resistance as they push through the air.

As for high-tech science gear, the new low-drag hydrophobic Fastskin LZR Racer swimsuit from Speedo claims a 5% decrease in drag. The suit basically compresses and covers specific regions of the body to reduce drag as the swimmer pushes through the water.

Tell me what you think? Should athletes use science to their advantage while competing?

Go to the Hooked on Science WebChannel for an experiment called Soaring Toilet Paper that will teach you all about Bernoulli's principle.
