PDF: Email pertaining to DNA in Lawless homicide (150 kilobytes)

Greetings,

Those interested in the Angela Mischelle Lawless homicide case, in which Joshua C. Kezer recently won an evidentiary hearing in Cole County, might be interested in this email. It pertains to the DNA evidence in the case, and the Southeast Missourian obtained it through a sunshine request under Missouri's open records law. The email, dated May 21, is from Michael Spillane, an attorney trying the case for the attorney general's office, to the director of the highway patrol's crime lab.

Last month, DNA results showed that the man mentioned in the email, the sparring partner of Lawless, did not match the unknown male DNA profile found under Lawless's fingernails. This man's name is withheld because he was never considered a suspect in the case.

I posted this on the editorial page. I thought it deserved to be here as well so more people could see it. Bridget and the Missourian deserve that.

I have seen every piece written by Bridget about this story. She inspired me to get involved. Her relentless efforts to make the information available is remarkable. I don't know much about journalism but, I would have to suspect that this type of reporting is award-winning stuff. Even if not, she still deserves to be commended. Growing up in Cape, reading the Missourian my whole life, I even delivered it as a teenager, I have never seen a better piece of reporting than what Bridget has done with this story. Several months ago, the Millers ran some pieces about a little girl from Doniphan with lymphoma. That little girl is my cousin. I said at the time that that was the best story ever written in the Missourian. Bridget's reporting ranks right up there with it. Having a personal connection with both of these stories I understand the impact they have had on the friends and families of all involved. With the inspirational reporting from the Millers and Bridget, I have never been more proud to be from Cape Girardeau and call the Southeast Missourian my hometown paper. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Miller. Thank you Bridget. Thank you Rust family. Thank you Southeast Missourian

BABE-

Two more points. I don't know what planet you live on but, down here on Earth a prosecutor makes a decision, based on the investigation and the evidence raised within that investigation, whether or not to prosecute. Kenny (and the AG'S office) chose to try this case. He can be and is held responsible for the entire case. I seem to remember a very popular case in North Carolina where an overzealous prosecutor moved forward with a bad case.......didn't work out so well for him did it???? I'm finished with this guy.......anyone else?

BABE-

That's where you are mistaken. I don't give a damn about Kenny Hulshof's political career. I haven't used anyone's plight for anything. Josh is a friend of mine. I grew up with him. I know his mother. I spent weekends at their house. This is personal for me. Their are only a handful of people actually getting off their butts to do anything for him. I am ashamed it took me so long to do it. But make no mistake, that is my sole motivation. If I can do some good for Josh and happen to somehow stifle the career of the person who truly used Josh's life for his own gain, then that is just a bonus. Josh has been in a cage for 16 years while this scumbag attorney has lived a priveledged life. Somehow, you and some other blind to the facts human beings seem to think that Kenny Hulshof shouldn't be held responsible for what he did. Say, what you want about the case but, there was absolutely no proof that Josh did this. Kenny knew it then and he knows it now. Let me clarify something to you and these other morons who think me or some other people on Josh's side are in this to somehow ruin Kenny Hulshof. If his political career doesn't continue beyond where he is now, I think that would be a blessing but, I do not care about that as it compares to my friend realizing his dream of justice.
Kenny has to live with the fact of knowing he sent an innocent man to prison, that is satisfaction enough for me but, it won't deter me from speaking out agasinst him and for Josh. It's just a shame that you and other people can't see him for what he is. He is a deviant who used the misfortune of the Lawless family, and the future of my friend for what......a tally mark on his conviction belt. I wonder what he really feels like when he looks at his daughters. Does he think about Joan Kezer? Does he think about Mr. and former Mrs. Lawless? Does he have any remorse? Recently, he was asked by a reporter, "In a case where there was a conviction based SOLELY on circumstantial evidence, is there anything wrong with going back and looking at direct evidence that may have affected the case." He responded with, "Well, you want the right outcome, that's why you have the appellate process." This is the thought process of your beloved Kenny Hulshof. I cannot believe remarkable idiocy of some people.......

You and several others have used this man's plight as a political campaign issue. Shame on you. A PA uses the evidence he is presented and cannot be held responsible for field mistakes in an investigation. You have been beating a dead horse, sir.

Bolivar-

That has to be the single most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. If you believe that it is a prosecutor's job to convict innocent people then you have got some serious issues. It's obvious your ignorance is only outmatched by your stupidity. I am seriously at a loss. I am not going to take the time to explain how this was wrong in so many ways to a person who obviously does not think with both sides of their brain. As your comments resonate with me I feel a rage rise up. How would you feel if this had happened to a family member of yours or you? Josh Kezer has spent damn near half his life in prison because of this tragedy and the best you can come up with is "anti-Hulshof" & "doing his job". You are fantasticaly ignorant, astonishingly stupid, and your thoughts and ideas are a complete travesty of wasted oxygen. To hell with you.......with all due respect.

You anti-hulshoff people crack me up. This just proves he was a good prosecutor doing his job. If Kezer is innocent, the finger should be pointed at the defense. How good could it have been that they couldn't get an innocent guy off the hook.

I don't know why my last comment is not posted but, anyone who wants to get involved to help Josh or stop Kenny Hulshof, please e-mail me at:

Sorry. That first line should say "stop" people like Kenny Hulshof.

-- Posted by davereynolds on Tue, Aug 19, 2008, 8:34 am CDT

against the wind and anyone else....

There are ways to get involved. If you are interested, please e-mail me at esimodave@sbcglobal.net

There are things we can do to help Josh and keep people like Kenny Hulshof. We can stop him from obtaining positions of power to continue his path of political ambition no matter what the cost. Two weeks ago he had a campaign stop at JCS-Tel Link in Cape. I am sure he will be coming back before November. If anyone is serious, please e-mail me and we can work together for Josh and hopefully throw a wrench into the Hulshof machine. I hope I hear from you soon

Angela Mischelle Lawless was an active student in Karate...that's what they mean by "sparring partner".

-- Posted by Ithink on Tue, Aug 19, 2008, 8:33 am CDT

What I want to know is: how do we in our little corner of southeast MO get the word out to the rest of MO about what a creepazoid Hulshof is? He so obviously convicted this young man to make a name for himself, with no regard for the truth.

davereynolds:

You hit the nail right on the head. Now it seems the AG's office is trying to mold the lack of physical evidence to say he is guilty and NOW all of a sudden there must have been an accomplice????? Unbelievable. Thank God for you Brigette (sp) Keep the pressure on. I truly believe without you bringing all of this out the state will never admit he's innocent. What a travesty. I sure get sick when I see Kenny Hulshof commercials and he talks about his honor and integrity.
It's beyond disgusting. GO BRIGETTE.GO SHERIFF WALTHER. GOD BLESS YOU BOTH.

Even though this message was sent prior to winning the evidentiary hearing it shows how desperate they are to maintain the conviction......it's almost ridiculous for this guy to even suggest Josh had an accomplice.

-- Posted by davereynolds on Mon, Aug 18, 2008, 2:56 pm CDT

Bear-

No, Kezer did not have an accomplice.....this is the only option the AG's office has now. Since they can't produce evidence of absolute guilt that supports the conviction, they are grabbing at straws to try to prevent Josh's defense team from proving absolute innocence. That's all they have left. Because Josh's team won the evidentiary hearing....the tables are turned. Josh's lawyers are now on the offense and the AG's office can't stop it, other than to try and raise enough suspicion that it is still possible that he did it no matter what Josh's lawyers present in the hearing. This is big. This reporter continues to inspire me.........FREE JOSH KEZER!!!!!!!!!!!

this case should be made into an episode of cold case.
