Senseless property crimes

Friday, August 8, 2008

Grafiti artists, using that term loosely, generally show a disrespect for other people's property, and their community. That said, Allentown, Penn., and Queens, NY, where I used to live, you do see some of them use spray paint as the medium for some pretty amazing artwork that almost enhances, rather than defaces, a pretty bleak area of town.

However, I have to say something about Cape Girardeau's latest grafiti "artist." Two buildings, Obama's headquarters on Broadway, and Fenny's Mexican Grocery, have now been hit this week with some grafiti that contained racial slurs. Not only does it cost the owner money to have it cleaned up, its offensive to anyone who has to see it in the meantime. Another building, 817 Broadway, was marked with the same red paint, and what police believe may be a "tag" the suspect is using.

If anyone has any information on these senseless property cirmes, they are urged to contact the Cape Girardeau Polie Department, or Crimestoppers.

I'm like you, Bridget, in that SOME graffitti art is just that-art. Truly amazing stuff. You can see it sometimes on the train cars going through town. Racial slurs are another thing, though. Any no-talent loser can take a can of spray paint and write some derrogatory words...
