TGIF!

Friday, August 8, 2008

Only a few hours are left in the work day and this weekend I'm batching it! That's right, the wife's out of town to visit my in-laws in Duluth, Minn. I dropped her off at the St. Louis airport around 5:45 this morning and then drove to Olivet Road to pick up a pastry and a cup of hazelnut coffee at Lamar's, my favorite coffee shop back in Nebraska. Afterwards, I accidentally got my first driving tour of the spanking new Busch Stadium and the Millennium Hotel. Maybe next time I'll actually get to enjoy a game there.

So, with the wife gone, I have a whole lot of time with a whole lot of nothing planned. Maybe I'll patronize a coffee shop, order a pizza or write another entry on my blog.

Speaking of blogging, Shawn Christian said at the fraud seminar I covered on Thursday that the Y generation -- individuals born between 1980 and 1994 -- are no longer as concerned with what their salary will be but rather care about how much flex time they'll receive to blog. He said that in five years banking will be very different than it is today, primarily because of technological advances and the type of employee that is beginning to work in financial institutions.

How much do you think banking and the job market in general will change in five years? One can only speculate, but everywhere you look text messaging has replaced e-mail and phone conversations. And that's just one example of the business world we live in today. While I do love the way technology has improved my workplace, a part of me feels like the personal touch is begin taken out of business and life in general.

cubbytodd,

I wish we had a TGIF here. In Lincoln I had to travel to Omaha (which is about 45 minutes away) to eat there. I've only lived in two places that had a TGIF. Besides TGIF, the great thing about Omaha (which recently hosted the swimming trials) is that I was able to attend the College World Series.

But enough about that. I'm about to catch the Cubs-Cardinals game in preparation for a long night in front of the TV. Maybe I'll grab a great post-game meal before Michael Phelps goes for his first gold medal.

Hey Brian don't excite me like that -- only my wife is allowed to do that!!! I saw the headline TGIF and thought maybe you had a scoop on one being built here in Cape. Guess not, maybe next time

Have a good weekend being a bachelor. Enjoy while you can

The banking world has already changed for me. Savings dollars get swapped into whichever FDIC/NCUA bank located anywhere in the US is offering the best rates. With direct deposit & automated bill pay setting foot in a bank location is almost archaic, and it seems like such a hassle to cash the physical checks that older relatives or friends give me when compared to an EFT.

Those in the banking industry should be prepared to be squeezed tighter as there is zero reason for a bank customer to have any loyalty to a bank. I simply cannot imagine the quality of customer service that would be required in order to justify an extra half point of interest on a mortgage(unless the broker is going to mow my lawn every week for the duration of the loan).
