Lime Village, Alaska -- the gas capital of the nation

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

A search this morning on gasbuddy.com found the cheapest gas in southeast Missouri can be found at Basic Fuel in Perryville, Mo., where drivers can fuel up for only $3.64/gallon. Several stations in Fruitland were offering gas for 10 cents more per gallon.

But do you think we have it bad here? The residents of Lime Village, Alaska, would disagree.

They were paying $8.55/gallon on Friday, nearly double what the $4.65/gallon average costs in the state, according to Reuters news service. The community is combining such tasks as collecting firewood and checking fish nets. One resident even moved his fish camp from an outer area to the innder village so he could eliminate a boat trip completely. The situation has deteriorated to the point that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has requested the legislature pass a proposal to send one-time $1,200 energy checks to all state residents.

Though Alaska is thousands of miles away, I would assume that many of their residents share the same complaint as Missourians regarding the current gas situation. But how do you feel about the price of fuel at the pump? How are you cutting back?

And what type of other gas stories would you like me to write about? I'm all ears!

Did you hear that motorists in Norway pay $11 a gallon for diesel? They didn't give the price for gasoline, but you would think the world's No. 4 or 5 producer of oil would have cheaper gas than that. No the government imposes high taxes to discourage people from driving. Seventy percent of the residents of Norway opposed a recent tax increase, but that didn't keep the bureaucrats from going through with it.

Chief Broom, I wish I could solve the gas situation. It's put a serious cramp in my sweet tea and ballgame fund! While I was driving to Homecomers last night, I noticed gas for ONLY 3.69 at a Jackson station.

One of the things that has had a negative effect on gas prices is ethanol blends. Oil is one of the main ingredients, it takes oil to produce and ship it, and the mileage isn't as good, so more is needed. And let's please not forget the effect it's having on food prices. More land being used for corn, less for soy, wheat, etc. EVERYTHING goes up in price as a result of ethanol blends. It's time to wake up.

Write whatever story you can to solve the fuel crisis, Brian. Thank you.

Cost of living is higher in some areas than others. If they don't like it, they can move. Why does everyone think the government should bail them out? What happened to the concept of taking care of yourself? I'll believe people are hurting financially when they start cancelling cable/satellite, getting rid of cell phones, buy generic food, etc.

Don't Alaska residents already get money for oil? Or is it natives only?
