Sikeston establishes litter hot line

Wednesday, July 9, 2008

SIKESTON, Mo. — The Sikeston Department of Public Safety has established a litter hot line.

"It is up and operational as we speak," department director Drew Juden said during the regular city council meeting Monday.

The number, 573-475-3737, rings into the department's 24-hour communication center, according to Juden. In the event dispatchers are busy, the call is routed to voice mail.

The litter hot line was established "in an effort to crack down on littering," according to a Monday news release from the department, and shows "the city of Sikeston takes the problem of littering very seriously."

The news release encourages those who observe a situation that requires police action for littering to immediately call the hot line number to pass along the information. Callers may remain anonymous by calling the number to report littering violations.

Mayor Mike Marshall said he is in favor of the hot line and hopes it will make a positive difference in the community.

"I want to catch these rascals," Marshall said. "I think this hot line is a good idea and one way of slowing [littering] down."

Ok must not be a Sikestonian if you can't spell MURRAY Lane. Yes, my hometown has its share of problems...haven't been to a town that doesn't. But when you start pointing out neighborhoods that have problems then I can see an even bigger problem. I know a lot of nice folks in most of that area that you mentioned. Now, if you had just said West Malone north and take out the Sunset area then I could understand. And lets take out that area just west of the Methodist church. They are just way to uppity for their own good...and their kids are heathens. If I had kids that acted the way some of those did I would be embarrased to say they had my DNA. But hey, they learn from their parents.

You stated in a town packed with so much crime and violence everything in certain ares need to be torn down and paved over. There are some nice homes off of SW street along with Alan Wire that are in that area. Why would we tear those down? That area has been cleaned up a lot and it has been calmer due to increased patrols by DPS. The camera system has helped in that area also. Sikeston has made great progress and if the people who live here pitch in the town will continue to improve.

I have a "hot line" tip for your litter enforcement. Basically everything north of Murry Lane, west of the railroad tracks and south of Compress need to be leveled, thrown away and then paved over.

In a town that is so violent and packed with crime, I regret seeing DPS tasked with yet another city hall invented detail to attend to.
