In writing for this blog, I've tried to think of things that are interesting enough to relate that have to do with the salon. A lot of the goings on are really not that exciting though. The day to day of keeping up with towels in the laundry, washing color bowls, and taking out the trash are pretty boring. The most stimulating aspects of our work environment are the clients and the stories they tell. We are similar to the bartender. After a couple of drinks, a patron might be so inclined to empty their heart out. Stories of wandering spouses, troubled children, and demanding bosses probably pour out as fast as the liquor behind the bar. Remember the last time you had your hair washed? I believe it has a similar effect. We hear our clients trials and tribulations. Husbands are chastised, coworkers are ridiculed, neighbors are crucified and burdens are lifted. We do not have a hippocratic oath, but it goes without saying we are obligated to keep the revelations under wraps. In general, we can be diplomatic and sympathetic. The faceless can remain that way while our clients unload about the latest person(s) annoying them. Many times I have joked about my other license I need to hang on the wall. (The therapist license!) Clients have commented that they need to pay that bill too, along with the haircut. In no way have I ever implied I have solved anyone's problems, but sometimes a client just needs to vent to feel better! A reassuring nod and the shoulder to cry on sometimes has meant more than the haircut itself. In the next few posts I want to relate how this has impacted my life. Stay tuned....
