My last date with Pho 8
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
On Christmas Eve eve I grabbed a pen and notebook and headed over to Pho 8. I was looking for a steaming hot bowl of comfort food and hoping to find inspiration for this column along the way. I get a little anxious at the culmination of each year. While most people are worrying about their New Year's Eve attire or who they will be kissing when midnight arrives, I feel pressure to make everything THE BEST EVER before 2021 slips away into the past...

A reward of a frosty morning
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
It is a thrill to go out on a frosty morning and look for small things with frost on them. Frost will form on most plants and some mushrooms when nights are calm and temperatures fall below the freezing mark. Frost will melt away quickly when sunshine hits it or air temperatures rise above freezing. It is important to go outside early because most often frost will be gone by 8:30 or 9 a.m...

German family establishes gunsmith store
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
In 1607, the Bahn family served as cartmen in the old country transporting wine east from Benshausen to the sea and bringing back corn, dried fish, salt and linen fabric. However, with the advent of the railroads their profession declined rapidly. Times became difficult in Germany in the early 1800s. ...

A lion in my garage
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
I finally tackled some of my "honey-do" projects. Some I had put off for years. Those projects hung over my head like a great weight. I felt guilty for not getting them done and had no answer when they would be finished. I was frustrated. Though she would never show it, I knew my wife was frustrated, too. For some reason, in my mind, the energy it took to tackle just one of them was overwhelming...

Encouragement along the way
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
And now, with Christmas day, we finally start the Christmas season. The waiting and unfulfillment of Advent are over. We have 16 days to celebrate the fullness of Christmas, from Christmas Eve through the Baptism of the Lord, this year on Jan. 9. Now, I feel like I can finally say it and mean it fully: Merry Christmas...

Recipes for the New Year
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
Through the Christmas season I have enjoyed looking for recipes that are new to me, and in the process I came across some old favorites, like candied orange peel, that I haven't made in a long time. It is fun to stick to tradition and prepare familiar family favorite recipes, but I also enjoy adding in new recipes to shake things up a bit...

New beginnings
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
Well, we made it another year despite all the sickness and disease here in America. Most of us have lost a friend or someone we know who caught COVID-19 and didn't make it, or someone who survived COVID but will carry scars forever. Many of us have had COVID or were a "probable." We've worn the masks and sanitized our hands. ...

Three books for liberty-loving readers in 2022
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
This time of year, dear readers, is when us writers curate lists. Some are about the best movies, top kitchen appliances or favorite new songs of 2021. This year, I'd like to recommend three books to read after the tumultuous events of 2021. My first is a new and important book by law professors Randy Barnett and Evan Bernick: "The Original Meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment." The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, and before it, no individuals of African descent -- including slaves and free persons -- could become U.S. ...

The ungracious -- and their demonization of the past
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
The last two years have seen an unprecedented escalation in a decades-long war on the American past. But there are lots of logical flaws in attacking prior generations in U.S. history. Critics assume their own judgmental generation is morally superior to those of the past. So, they use their own standards to condemn the mute dead who supposedly do not measure up to them...

Dems reject work ethic, embrace freeloaders
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
The Democratic Party used to call itself the party of working people and hail the "dignity of work." No more. Now Democrats want to guarantee people who choose not to work an income funded by the suckers who do the right thing by showing up for work, caring for their family and paying taxes...

More government, less religion -- the progressive doctrine
(Column ~ 01/01/22)
One great mystery is the persistent refusal of those on the left to abandon what is clearly not true. That is, that the means for reducing the burden of poverty is more government spending. It all really started in the 1960s under President Lyndon B. ...
