Four by Four 2/15/15
(Community ~ 02/15/15)
Monday is Presidents Day. Name a favorite president. Abraham Lincoln. He abolished slavery; it makes sense. What are the benefits when you pay it forward? Good karma. I feel like you should do it. It's just a given. Describe your ideal meal. Starts off with hot wings and Ro*tel dip, with Skittles on the side, red ones. And pink Starburst. What's the most memorable advice you've ever received? You can't expect somebody to be something just because you are. My sister told me that; just because I'm nice doesn't I can expect other people to be that way. Monday is Presidents Day. Name a favorite president. Lincoln. We're surrounded by his history. And he looked like my grandfather. Who doesn't love their grandfather? What are the benefits when you pay it forward? It's the reward that you get, it's the paying it forward itself. It just feels heavenly. It feels like I'm not stuck on the earth. Describe your ideal meal. Lamb, with mashed potatoes and green salad. Mint jelly, preferably shared. What's the most memorable advice you've ever received? To thine own self be true [from "Hamlet"]. It takes the acting out. Monday is Presidents Day. Name a favorite president. George W. Bush. Rosalynn Carter was my favorite first lady. She had more dignity than anyone else. What are the benefits when you pay it forward? I'm definitely a believer in good deeds. We'll be judged for what we do to others. I volunteer 10 to 12 times a month at V.A. homes and senior homes. Describe your ideal meal. I'm a hamburger and hot dog man myself. Coconut cream pie and potato soup. What's the most memorable advice you've ever received? Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Monday is Presidents Day. Name a favorite president. Buchanan. Way back in my history; we're related. What are the benefits when you pay it forward? I visit the patients in the nursing homes. I feel that's my good deed for the day. Describe your ideal meal. Green beans and mushrooms. Catfish, too. and cream horns for dessert. What's the most memorable advice you've ever received? You have to take the good with the bad. My son, Greg Shaver, told me that. If you don't accept that, then it'll be your loss.

(Local News ~ 02/15/15)
Out on Route C is a crossroads that still matters. If you head north into Perry County, up into the winding hills and scattered woods, past sun-bleached barns, grain bins and sensible farm houses, past where the ribbon of highway curls unhurried around corn fields, dry-stalked and dormant this time of year, you'll find it...

My bucket list
(Community ~ 02/15/15)
A while back I saw the movie "The Bucket List" starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. I suspect everyone has a bucket list, either written or unwritten. ...

Does it matter that valor and achievement are earned?
(Community ~ 02/15/15)
Referring to a boast that is ultimately untruthful, "blowing smoke" is a wonderful colloquialism. When I was attending seminary in the early '90s, a surprising number of my fellow students would pipe up in class and say, "I marched with Dr. King," meaning the great civil rights leader and Baptist pastor Martin Luther King Jr., assassinated 1968. In my hearing, these students were not challenged to provide details...

Even fear can be used to draw us closer to God
(Community ~ 02/15/15)
I think we've been getting it wrong. Growing up, I was always taught the opposite of love is hate. Throughout the past few years, I've realized thinking like this sells ourselves short, sells love and its depth short. Oversimplifies it. Maybe it's true hate is an antonym of love, depending on which qualities we're focusing on...

Red-tailed hawk: a roadside regular
(Community ~ 02/15/15)
Shown here is a bird of prey common to most of North America. It is a red-tailed hawk. Many people call it a chicken hawk, and it will swoop down to catch and eat a baby chick or small chicken if given the opportunity. If you plan to raise some chicks this spring, it will be wise to keep them inside a brooder house away from the red-tail hawk's prying eyes...
