LETTERS: DIFFERENT BELIEFS, SAME HIGHER POWER
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/09/98)
To the editor: In response to the recent letter, "Paganism is definitely a cult": Yes, paganism is a cult, but by definition alone so is any other religious foundation, be it Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist or pagan. The worship of any deity, regardless of name, shape or form, is deemed a cult. ...

(Column ~ 01/09/98)
In the early 1980's I made my first trip to Cape Girardeau as a member of the Glaucoma Detection Program, a service provided by the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation. We assisted the local Lions Clubs to test members of this community for glaucoma. KEEPING SAFE, WARM IN WINTER
(Local News ~ 01/09/98)
Many winter accidents happen the moment you step out your door. Marcia Abernathy, an R.N. and director of emergency services at Saint Francis Medical Center, said most of her winter patients are people who have injured themselves after they drive or walk on slick, icy surfaces. Many of those injuries, she said, happen because people in warm houses put on their warm shoes on and then step out into the cold...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 01/09/98)
CAN ANYBODY tell how anybody determines which television shows are watched the most? Nobody has ever in my entire life asked me what television show I am watching or have ever watched. In my opinion, the whole thing is just an assumption. Network people put on whatever television shows they want to put on, and they mislead us by saying this show or that show is the most watched show in the country...

LETTERS: PERSONAL MEMORIES PROVIDE HISTORY
(Letter to the Editor ~ 01/09/98)
To the editor: The recent death of Russell Fowler left a huge gap in my personal local history sources. Most of you know my passion for local history and genealogy. There is the unwritten rule in genealogy that when one is researching an unknown area, you seek out the undertaker and the newspaper historian or archivist. These are the folks who direct you to the old-timers in town...

RIVER CITY JOURNAL: A DAY WITHOUT SUNSHINE IS LIKE ... WELL, A GLOOMY DAY
(Column ~ 01/09/98)
I don't know about you, but I could stand a batch of days so bright it hurts to keep your eyes open. There ought to be some perky things you could say about the string of cloudy days we've been having in these parts. I tend to look for silver linings. I really do. But I must say that the gray skies are starting to tarnish, in my estimation...
