LETTERS: OPPOSE U.N. TREATY ON CLIMATE
(Letter to the Editor ~ 11/09/97)
To the editor: I am writing to express my deep concern over the Climate Change Treaty proposed by the United Nations. This treaty, if adopted this December, would have devastating effects upon the U.S. economy. The purpose of this treaty is to stop the effects of global warming by imposing severe environmental and economic restrictions on only a handful of developed nations, including the U.S., while exempting 132 of 166 developing nations. ...

FROM THE PULPIT: NOURISH THE BODY SPIRITUALLY
(Column ~ 11/09/97)
Time is the single commodity which each of us are given an equal share each day. There are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour, and 24 hours in a day. I once knew a man who tried to wean himself from the recommended eight hours of sleep per night. ...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 11/09/97)
I AGREE wholeheartedly with the caller who couldn't get a new doctor because he was on Medicare, even though the doctor was taking new patients. It's a crying, dirty shame. Up the river this past week, in St. Louis City and County, voters split on the question of raising a quarter-cent sales tax to fund what they were rather vaguely told would be transportation improvements. KINDER'S COMMENTARY: RESULTS SUGGEST A MORE RIGHTWARD COURSE APPEALS TO VOTERS

"To get the nomination" of the Republican Party, said that great trimmer, Richard Nixon, "you go to the right. Thereafter, for the general election you've got to go left." The ever-cagey Nixon might have added, but never did, that he intended to govern left as well, but that's another (depressing) column. ...

MISSOURI WATCH: INVISIBLE GIANT, CLOSED EYE SYNDROME
(Column ~ 11/09/97)
Several decades ago, describing the performance of Mel Carnahan in a different public office than he now holds, I wrote that the way the Gentleman From Rolla resolved problems was to close his eyes and the world went away. The gentile gentleman from Phelps County did not severely castigate me for such an off-handed observation, but it might be well for Missourians to look closely at the large number of public officials gathered in Jefferson City to determine who and how many are currently suffering from this Closed Eye Syndrome. ...
