MOVIE EXAMINES MORAL STRUGGLES
(Editorial ~ 06/28/95)
Being in a modest-sized town with a couple of hours to spend doing something, I decided to check the movie fare. Other than my living in Madison County, Mo. I decided to see "The Bridges of Madison County." I am not an avid moviegoer. I have liked much of Clint Eastwood's acting; some I have not. Meryl Streep was a complete stranger to me. Now I consider myself a fan...

GO FISH: BACKYARD PONDS MOVE FISH HOBBY OUTDOORS
(Local News ~ 06/28/95)
A goldfish came up close to the hand that feeds it. Anniversary gifts come in all shapes and sizes. Dennis Clark knew what his wife had in mind. Between the two there had been plenty of discussion and research. "My husband dug that out for my anniversary four years ago," said Beverly Clark, gesturing toward the 16-foot-long, figure-eight goldfish pond gracing the immediate front lawn of their Cape Girardeau home. "In 100-degree weather, he dug it with a tiller and a shovel."...

BUYOUTS MAKE ECONOMIC SENSE IN FLOOD PLAINS
(Editorial ~ 06/28/95)
Jerry Uhlmann, director of Missouri's State Emergency Management Agency, says the answer to flooding problems will be found in buyouts, not sandbags. At a meeting of the Cape Girardeau County Commission last week, he said he would like to see less rebuilding and more moving out of flood-prone lowlands. Recent experience with the floods of 1993 and 1995 would seem to bear him out. More and more taxpayers are saying that he is right...

BY THE WAY: MUSIAL WORTH AUTOGRAPH, $20 AND A GOOD STORY
(Column ~ 06/28/95)
Jeff Perkins had that twinkle in his eye and a fisherman's gaze, signs that usually point to a whale of a story. Considering that "Perk" does a convincing imitation of Keith Jackson, who used to call a "whale of a football game," I didn't have to be encouraged any further...

SPEAKOUT
(Speak Out ~ 06/28/95)
I'D LIKE to inquire about the wall of fame mural that's planned for the downtown river wall. This sounds like a good idea. I wonder if the planners have considered the cost of upkeep of this mural after the river comes up. I think now they have to go in and paint the simple mural that's on the wall and this will be a intricate piece of artwork that will require real artists to come in and touch it up each and every time the water comes up. ...
