Cape Girardeau soon will say goodbye to a familiar friend. Capt. Elmer Trapp took over as head of the local Salvation Army in 1988. Since then, he has endeared himself to the community with his tireless and selfless work through two historic floods and numerous other exercises in Christian compassion...

Soy flour isn't found in many family kitchens yet, but the food industry uses it extensively. Soy flour turns up in an array of food products, including fudge, pies, doughnuts, cakes, rolls and a number of other food products. "Soy flour can be used to produce a dense bread with a nutty flavor," said Warren Seidel, of the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council, headquartered in Jefferson City. "Some cooks use the flour to thicken gravies and cream sauces."...

HOLCOMB -- The community is preparing for its picnic and homecoming July 1-2. The picnic-homecoming is a time when former residents return to visit with friends and relatives. There will be a parade down Main Street beginning at 10 a.m. July 1. Besides barbecue and other refreshments, a shooting match will be held July 2. A band will provide music for the two-day event...

SIKESTON -- Brightly decorated trees and Santa Claus stockings can be found at the Christmas in June sale at the Sikeston Rescue Mission. Other items on sale throughout the month include furniture, books, clothes, shoes and hats. Proceeds of the sale will support programs that provide food baskets for the needy and homeless, Executive Director Dorene Johnson said...

The Cape Girardeau River Heritage Museum will hold its spring fund-raiser at Fazoli's today. The restaurant is offering an all-you-can-eat spaghetti or fettuccine dinner, and a portion of the cost will be donated to the museum. A display will be set up at the restaurant to collect donations...

Rebecca and Ryan Keller, a brother-sister dance team from Cape Girardeau, will compete in July at the Regency Talent National Dance Competition in St. Louis. The duo placed first in the regional competition to qualify for the national contest, which will be held July 16-22. They will perform to the music of "Swing Kids" at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Union Station...

The Salvation Army's Loan-A-Fan program gets under way Monday. To be eligible for a fan, recipients must be 55 or older or have children 5 or younger or be severely handicapped. Persons wishing to receive fans must provide identification, including proof of birth date, Social Security card, and proof of income. Fans will be given out Monday through Friday...

Once upon a time a business professor having a two-week-long fit of creativity wrote a light romance novel called "The Bridges of Madison County." Three years after it's publication and available only in hardback, "Bridges" has sold a record 18 million copies and at this moment still is the second-best selling novel in the nation...

ST. LOUIS -- An exhibition of 160 paintings, photos, sculptures and decorative works of art spanning 1,000 years of American history will open Friday at the Saint Louis Art Museum. "Made in America: Ten Centuries of American Art" features the work of more than 150 artists, including such well-known figures as Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, John Singer Sargent, Georgia O'Keefe and Jackson Pollock...

Eying the 1996 elections, House Republicans are laying the groundwork for radical changes in the nation's tax code. Support for a flat tax has intensified since the idea first was floated by House Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas. Now Armey's GOP cohort in Texas, Rep. Bill Archer, chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, has upped the ante, declaring the income tax "too broken to be fixed."...

A Kansas man was killed when a tractor-trailer rig struck a bridge on Interstate 55 near Scott City. The victim, Jeffrey Huls, 30, of Lenexa, was a passenger in the truck when the accident occurred Wednesday, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said. The driver was injured and taken to a Cape Girardeau hospital...

The mailman-dog relationship long has been a target for television writers and cartoonists. They portray mailmen with patches torn out of their pants or dangling from a tree limb to avoid snapping teeth below. For Rodger Snell, loose, vicious dogs are no joke. In 1991, he was delivering mail in a dark walkway and didn't see a black pit bull in the shadows. When he turned to walk away, the dog sunk its teeth into Snell's leg and wouldn't let go...
