LETTER: IMPERATIVE TO HAVE GOOD ROADS TO ACCOMPLISH PROGRESS
(Letter to the Editor ~ 11/20/94)
To the editor: I feel that the I-66 corridor would be one of the biggest economic boosts this area ever experienced. I have a problem with the fact that the Southeast Missourian cannot support this project. I may not see this highway in my lifetime, but I certainly give thanks to the people who brought I-55 through our area. ...

MISSOURI WATCH: A FABLE: POPPYCOCK AMENDMENT SOLVES ALL PROBLEMS 1794-STYLE
(Column ~ 11/20/94)
As Missourians prepared to move into the 21st century, they were presented a proposed constitutional amendment that sponsors promised would save them from their increasing dissatisfaction with modern-day life and times. Like their fellow citizens all across America, Missourians had grown weary of the travails of the 20th century and longed for a simpler time when, as many were wont to say, "a man's word was a man's word," whatever that meant...

MISSOURI COMMENTARY: TODAY'S HOT-BUTTON ISSUES HAVE RACIAL CURRENTS
(Column ~ 11/20/94)
Race is a more compelling factor in American politics today than at any time in our recent past. That's a provocative statement, but the 1994 congressional election unquestionably supports that conclusion. For decades, the Democratic party has had the lopsided support of black voters and the almost as lopsided support of Hispanic voters. ...

Spending a morning drinking coffee and eating doughnuts with the good people of Benton is just the sort of thing to put some sunshine into a rainy day. TAX LIMITS: TRY AGAIN
(Editorial ~ 11/20/94)
There has barely been time to take a breather since 68 percent of Missouri's voters rejected Amendment 7, the so-called Hancock II proposal. This complicated measure frightened voters. Its complex language even confused some of the state's top judges who were involved in pre-election legal jousting over the amendment. But already there is talk of another attempt to set limits on state spending and to give voters the final say on major statewide tax increases...

CAROLINE'S CORNER: ARMADILLO FOR DINNER?
(Column ~ 11/20/94)
Move over Southeast Missourians, the armadillos are headed your way. They are not a threat to your life, as are killer bees, and you don't need to dress in armor to protect yourself from the small beasts. I grew up in northern Mississippi when no armadillos graced the landscape. In fact, my outdated 1980 World Book Encyclopedia states that "armadillos are found from Argentina as far north as Texas and Louisiana."...

ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS: HUNTERS MAY FIND A DUCK IN EVERY POT
(Column ~ 11/20/94)
A dramatic across-the-board population increase in most species of ducks this year has waterfowlers virtually salivating over the promise of broadened opportunities. In truth, the past couple of duck season have been better for area hunters than they had a right to expect. The lean years proved to have had a fair amount of fat in them, primarily because migrations of existing birds were pretty well timed with seasons that put hunters out there to intercept them...
