BC, I've yet to read Semissourian's headline article reflecting the outcome of drug control, but it looks like the more meth cookers busted, the more meth smuggled in across the borders.
That chart could also be used to indicate government spending effects on education or the war on poverty.

My cousin's husband retired from DEA. He told me that the "War On Drugs" was a big farce. I knew that already though.

It should be pointed out that if drugs were legalized in America it would most likely take the wind out of the Mexican drugs cartel's sails.

A million years ago some friends and I went into Nuevo Laredo, Mex. to "party". You had to watch yourself then but it was okay. Today, I wouldn't even consider it.

We went to Acupulca in the early '90s. Stayed at the Princess and had a good time shopping and getting out. Went back two years later and didn't leave the hotel except with an organized tour. Old town had small pick ups with several guys armed with automatic rifles driving around. We were told they were there to protect the tourist from the thugs. Looking back I suspect there was more to it than protecting the tourist trade.
I asked a fellow running one of the beach pavillions that sold all kinds of souveniers and such how that worked. Language was a barrior but I understood the state owned the beach and to be able to have such a retail outlet one must..well kind of like your mafia.
One guy rented a car and just as he pulled off the hotel grounds a policeman stopped him and told him his fine $20. For what he didn't know. He put the car in reverse and backed up under the hotel canopy and the policeman drove away without his $20.
One of the best things about the trip concerned the hotel maids, two to a room, one morning one evening. We had one young pretty gal that spoke some English and an older lady that spoke none. I had a pocket full of Mexican change when we were leaving and gave it to the older lady. Not sure what she was saying but she hugged us both with tears in her eyes!

Let's treat morbidly obese people like we treat drug users.
Firstly, it would be illegal to be obese. Any substance that people used to get obese would also be illegal. Any substance that is not on the list of approved obesity causing substances that is.
The McDonald's and Burger King cartels would wage open war against each other to protect the huge profits that result from the war on obesity. When a Big Mac costs $250, you can bet that there will be some blood.
Our prisons will overflow with obese people and burger dealers at a cost of $100 billion anually. Despite the money confiscated to wage the war on obesity, people keep getting fat.
Naturally the politicians and law enforcers whose careers are built on the war on obesity will continue to flush the loot down the toilet. Ironically, their goals and the burger gangs' goals are the same, and have made them strange bedfellows.
I could go on, but it sounds just as stupid when applied to the failed war on drugs.

Is anyone concerned with the proposal to raise tobacco taxes. I understand it is justified because other states tax more than Missouri and besides, it's for the children as the money will go to education. [once it goes through the government shrinking machine]
I guess when that gets done we can look to add extra taxes on certian unhealthy foods to raise more revenue for schools to go along with lottery and casino revenues. We'll have the smartest children in the world, the kind that obey authority and recognize the importance of government and service to their country.
There will be money left over for everyone to participate in mandatory no cost health clubs and when we get to the point of recognizing the need for a general welfare tax, the citizens can enjoy free mandatory career and behavior councling.
Everyone can have no charge end of life planning at age 65 and grief counciling will be available for the populus to ease the loss of parents and loved in a predictable manner.
Yep, time to legalize pot for the tax revenue!

Well over 900 billion dollars wasted on this so called "drug war" Nixon declared over 4 decades ago. Thousands and thousand of deaths related to it as well. Thousands of non violent pot smokers sitting in jails and prisons costing tax payers billions. So tell me folks, how is the drug war working for us? Fact check: PROHIBITION does not work and only creates black markets which in turn create crime!
